The Federal Government has revealed plans to obtain unencumbered lands from states to enable it to build affordable houses for Nigerians, News About Nigeria reports.
This was disclosed at the ongoing 12th Meeting of the National Council on Housing and Urban Development in Kaduna by the Permanent Secretary of the Federal Ministry of Works and Housing, Mahmuda Mamman.
He stated that the move would provide the vulnerable population of the country with places to lay their heads, thereby bridging the gap currently existing in the housing sector.
The National Housing Scheme Programme, according to him, is part of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s Administration to make housing affordable for all Nigerians in line with the President’s agenda of renewed hope.
Mahmuda Mamman further disclosed that a survey was being carried out by the National Population Commission to find out the accurate figure of the housing deficit in the country, noting that the figures would be revealed when the survey was completed.
Recall that the Federal Government had disclosed its plans to build 34,500 houses across the country in a move aimed at addressing the housing shortage in the country.
The FG had disclosed that the housing initiative was going to be carried out via a combination of the Federal Mortgage Bank, Federal Housing Authority, and Private-Public Partnerships (PPP).
The Minister of Housing and Urban Development, Mr Ahmed Musa Dangiwa, had also revealed that according to the Government’s in-house estimate, the Federal Government will have to build about 550,000 new homes per annum over the next ten years to meet the housing needs of Nigerians.
