The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has refuted allegations made by Nigerian singer John Njeng-Ngeng, popularly known as Skales, that the agency invaded his home.
Skales took to social media on Tuesday morning to claim that EFCC officials, armed with guns and hammers, broke into his residence while he and his 6-month-old daughter were sleeping.
The singer also claimed that his producer was assaulted during the incident and accused the EFCC of misusing its authority.
News About Nigeria reports that in response to Skales’ allegations, EFCC spokesperson Dele Oyewale denied the accusations in a phone call with PUNCH.
Oyewale said that the EFCC does not conduct invasions or raids in the manner described by Skales.
Oyewale stated, “Number 1, we don’t invade. Number 2, we don’t conduct any raids. Number 3, there are ways and rules to identify a regular EFCC operative.”
He further suggested that the incident might involve impersonators posing as EFCC officials.
“People can make allegations but the authenticity of the allegation viz a viz the reality on the ground concerning any organisation you’re talking about is important,” he said.
“There are impersonations all around, all over the place. So, they are not. We are very polite. We don’t do all those things.”
Oyewale called on Skales to provide evidence to substantiate his claims.
Skales, in response to the EFCC’s denial, maintained his position and alleged that the officials seized his phone and threatened him during the incident.
He also claimed that his neighbours had recorded the incident, potentially providing evidence.
Skales alleged that one Femi, allegedly associated with the EFCC, threatened him following his social media outburst.
