The Minister for Sports Development in Nigeria, John Eno, has revealed that the President Bola Tinubu-led government was exploring diplomatic measures to settle the dispute between Nigerian top striker Victor Osimhen and his club Napoli.
Making this disclosure in a statement made available on his official X (Twitter) handle, Mr Eno berated the treatment meted out to Nigerian athletes on the global stage.
“My office is trying to reach Victor Osimhen directly as well to understand first-hand the issues. We are committed to establishing the facts of the matter. Meanwhile, I am in touch with the Honorable Minister of Foreign Affairs, H.E. Yusuf Maitama Tuggar and the Nigerian Ambassador to the Republic of Italy, Ambassador Mfawa Abam. Together, we are employing Diplomatic avenues with Italy for a more proper approach to looking into the matter as it is,” the tweet partly read.
News About Nigeria recalls that the Napoli talisman had earlier revealed that he might explore legal actions against his club after the club posted a video mocking the player on social media.
Following the publication of the video on the club’s TikTok account featuring Osimhen in a way that suggested mockery, the player’s relationship with the Serie A champions went south.
The club was under threat of legal action from Osimhen’s agent, Roberto Calenda. The player could sustain “very serious damage” as a result of the clip, he continued.
On his Instagram page, Osimhen also removed pictures and posts about the Italian Serie A champions.
The video mocking Osimhen was put up on the club’s social media account after the striker failed to score a Penalty in the club’s last weekend fixture.
