The Presidential candidate of the African Action Congress, AAC at the 2023 presidential election Omoyele Sowore has questioned the rationale behind the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited’s move to secure a $ 3 billion loan as the President Bola Tinubu-led government continues to explore options to revive plummeting value of the country’s currency.

News About Nigeria had earlier reported that NNPCL secured a $3 billion loan from Afrexim bank.

According to a statement made by NNPCL, the facility will give NNPC Ltd. an immediate disbursement that will allow it to assist the Federal Government with its ongoing fiscal and monetary policy measures targeted at stabilizing the exchange rate market.

The loan is also anticipated to increase the value of the Naira, enable the government to fulfil foreign exchange demand, and aid in stabilising the foreign exchange market.

However, in response to the news Mr Sowore who doubles as the publisher of Sahara Reporters wondered why a private company would worry itself about helping the country subsidize naira.

Mr. Sowore in his tweet suggested that Afrexim bank was complicit in Godwin Emefiele’s alleged money laundry scheme, he claimed that the former apex bank boss shipped Nigeria’s money to Afrexim bank.

“Economic Saboteurs! Very criminally minded buccaneers! I thought they said @nnpclimited is no longer owned by Nigeria, what’s a supposedly “private company” doing with helping the Nigerian state to subsidize the Naira. And who is @afreximbank? Is that not the same bank @GodwinIEmefiele has been shipping Nigerian money to? #revolutionnow,” tweet by Sowore read.
