Former Kadun Senator, Shehu Sani has advised Nigerians to stop advocating for a coup suggesting that Nigeria’s democracy can still be redeemed or refined.

Issuing this plea against calls for a coup as the Nigerian economy continues to worsen, the former Kaduna Senator said that the struggle for a just society could still be won within the context of democracy.

Begging Nigerians to stop inciting and soliciting for a coup, Mr. Sani wrote: “Our democracy can still be redeemed or refined. The struggle for a just, equitable and more prosperous society can still be won within the context of democracy. Our Countrymen, pls stop advocating, soliciting or inciting for a coup in Nigeria.”

News About Nigeria reports that his comment comes just as the spokesperson of the Nigerian military brigadier general Tukur Gusau revealed that some individuals were calling on the military to forcefully size power from President Bola Tinubu-led government.

The military described the reports as highly unpatriotic, wicked, and an attempt to distract the Armed Forces of Nigeria from performing its constitutional responsibilities.

His remarks come as the Economic Community of West African States ramps up its efforts to return the country to democratic rule. His tweet also comes as Nigerians await the decision of the President Election Petition Tribunal, in which the presidential candidates of the Peoples Democratic Party, Atiku Abubakar, and the Labour Party, Peter Obi, have asked the court to remove President Bola Tinubu, who was declared the winner of the February 2023 presidential election by INEC.

However, there are suspicions that moves by the judiciary to issue a judgment that is generally perceived to be unjust may provoke nationwide protests.
