Former Vice President and the Presidential candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party at the 2023 general elections Atiku Abubakar has taken to his social media page to mourn worshippers who died as Zaria Central mosque collapsed on Friday.
Mourning the worshippers in a tweet on Friday, Mr. Abubakar commiserated with families of victims that died in the building collapse.
“It is with grief and sadness that I received news of the collapse of a part of Zaria Central Mosque and the death of some worshippers observing the Asr Prayer this (Friday) evening. I commiserate with the families that may have lost a loved one, the congregants of the mosque and the Emir and good people of Zazzau Emirate Council over the unfortunate incident. It is my fervent prayer that Allah, the Gracious and the most Merciful, will grant the deceased eternal peace and comfort their families,” Tweet by Atiku read.
News About Nigeria gathered that 4 worshippers were reported dead during the late afternoon Asr prayers on Friday.
Witness accounts claim that while the fall claimed the lives of four worshippers, seven more people suffered serious injuries.
“Four worshippers have died after the Zaria central mosque collapsed on Friday. Seven other people sustained injuries in the accident that occurred when the worshippers were observing prayers around 4 pm,” the eyewitness said.
The Emir of Zazzau, Amb Ahmed Nuhu Bamalli, reportedly issued an edict suspending operations at the Mosque and expressed profound shock and sorrow at the event.
Hospitals were providing medical care to seven other people who were reportedly hurt during the building collapse.
