Former Kaduna Senator, Shehu Sani has warned the President Bola Tinubu-led Economic Community for West African States not to drag West African nations to war.
Issuing this warning in the wake of a communique issued after the ECOWAS leadership meeting held in Abuja on Thursday, Senator Sani described the communique issued by ECOWAS as contradictory, he further wondered why the union would set up a standby force while opting for dialogue.
“ECOWAS communique is contradictory; opting for dialogue and setting up a standby force. Our message to the leaders of West Africa is unambiguously clear, Do not drag us to war because of the coup in Niger,” Shehu Sani warned.
News About Nigeria had earlier reported that the union had ordered its troop on standby to restore constitutional order to Niger.
The move by the union comes against many calls that advised the bloc to consider diplomatic measures instead of force to return Niger to democratic rule.

However, against calls for a peaceful resolution, ECOWAS on Thursday ordered its standby troops to Niger. Many Nigerians have continued to express worries suggesting that Nigeria would greatly feel the brunt if ECOWAS goes to war against the West African nation.
President Tinubu-led ECOWAS seeks to reinstate the democratically elected Niger president Mohamed Bazouma who was ousted by a military coup in July.
However, the Nigerien junta seems resolute as it set up a 21-man ministerial cabinet to run the affairs of the nation.
