The Osun State House of Assembly has recently revoked the Osun State Anthem, Crest, and Flag Law 2012, News About Nigeria reports.
This decision was made during a session of the House on Tuesday.
The Speaker of the Assembly, Adewale Egbedun, explained that the repeal was in accordance with a Federal High Court judgment dated December 14, 2017.
The case was originally brought to court by Kanmi Ajibola, who is currently a member of the House representing Oriade State Constituency and a member of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).
The Speaker further elaborated that although there might be certain aspects of the law that were appropriate, the House agreed that all necessary revisions to the Osun State Anthem, Crest, and Flag Law 2012 would be incorporated into the proposed Osun State Anthem, Crest, and Flag Bill 2023, which is sponsored by the Majority Leader.
By repealing the outdated law, the Osun State House of Assembly has demonstrated its commitment to abiding by the rulings of the judiciary and ensuring that the state’s legislation remains in line with the constitution.
The decision to incorporate necessary corrections into a new bill reflects the Assembly’s intention to preserve any relevant and appropriate elements from the previous law while conforming to legal requirements.
This repeal marks a significant step towards aligning the state’s legislative framework with the Nigerian constitution, which serves as the fundamental law of the land.
The House’s actions uphold the principles of justice and respect for the rule of law, as mandated by the judiciary.
The decision also signifies the legislature’s commitment to transparency and accountability in its processes and demonstrates its responsiveness to the concerns of the people.
