The Zamfara State Government has finally addressed the recent raid on the residence of former Governor Bello Matawalle, News About Nigeria reports.
On Friday morning, the ex-governors home in Gusau was stormed by the police.
However, the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Zamfara claimed that the Department of State Services (DSS) and the police also conducted raids on Matawalle’s residences in Gusau and his hometown of Maradun.
The APC accused Governor Dauda Lawal’s administration of engaging in a witch-hunt, asserting that if there were any issues against the former governor, he should be taken to court.
In response to these allegations, Senior Special Assistant (Media and Publicity) to the Zamfara Governor, Suleiman Idris, released a statement on Wednesday evening clarifying the government’s position.
According to the statement, stolen property belonging to the government was recovered during the operation.
It was clarified that the Nigeria Police Force carried out the raid on the former governor’s residence, impounding over 40 vehicles.
The police acted based on a court order and obtained a search warrant for the operation.
The Zamfara State Government had previously officially requested that former Governor Bello Matawalle and his Deputy return all the missing vehicles within five working days.
Additionally, an official complaint was lodged with the police regarding the wasteful looting of valuables, including official vehicles, which was considered against the public interest.
Consequently, the police sought a search warrant, which was granted by the court, leading to the raids on Matawalle’s residence in Gusau, Maradun Local Government, and another undisclosed hideout.
The operation resulted in the recovery of more than 40 vehicles, including three bulletproof vehicles and eight SUVs.
The statement from the Zamfara State Government emphasized their commitment to recovering all assets that rightfully belong to the people.
It stated that the rescue and rebuilding of Zamfara are of paramount importance, and the recovery of proceeds from crimes and public assets plays a vital role in this mission.
The people of Zamfara were urged to remain calm as significant improvements are being made in the areas of security and the persistent issue of water scarcity in the state.
The government’s statement aimed to reassure the public that their interests are being protected and that efforts are being made to restore peace and address pressing concerns.
The recovery of stolen property and the commitment to rebuilding the state were emphasized as essential components of the government’s mission.
