The National Agency for Food, Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) recently demolished counterfeit and substandard goods and products valued at over N4.2 billion in Awka, the capital city of Anambra State.
News About Nigeria reports that the Director-General of NAFDAC, Prof. Mojisola Adeyeye, emphasized that this action aligns with the agency’s mission to eliminate fake and unauthorized NAFDAC-regulated items from circulation across Nigeria.
The destruction exercise took place at the Aswama Dumpsite in Umuzocha, near the Anambra State secretariat complex.
Represented by Francis Ononiwu, the Head of NAFDAC’s Task Force team, Adeyeye stated that the event marked a joint effort between the South-East and South-South zones to periodically eliminate illicit products.
The confiscated items comprised counterfeit, substandard, and falsified medicinal products, as well as unwholesome processed food products and other unsafe regulated goods.
Among the seized items were antibiotics, anti-hypertensive drugs, anti-diabetic medications, anti-asthmatic treatments, aphrodisiacs, antimalarial drugs, anti-inflammatory medications, herbal remedies, and psychoactive substances.
Additionally, the confiscated goods included banned drugs like analgin, tramadol (over 100mg), gentamycin 280mg, as well as controlled substances, vaccines, alcoholic and non-alcoholic beverages, cosmetics, chemicals, and unwholesome food products.
This action is part of NAFDAC’s broader strategy to combat the proliferation of counterfeit and substandard products in the market.
The agency said it remains vigilant in its surveillance activities, conducting regular inspections of manufacturers, importers, and distributors to identify and seize illicit goods.
These proactive measures are crucial in preventing the infiltration of fake and substandard items into the market, thereby safeguarding public health and promoting consumer confidence.
