The governor of Lagos State, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, has taken a significant step in the reorganization of his administration by dissolving his cabinet ahead of his second-term swearing-in ceremony on May 29, 2023.
News About Nigeria reports that Sanwo-Olu, along with his deputy, Obafemi Hamzat, will officially begin their four-year second term on May 29, and this move is seen as a way to ensure a fresh start and introduce new faces into the government.
The dissolution of the cabinet was announced by the Head of Service, Hakeem Muri-Okunola, through a circular labeled No. 046, which was circulated on Wednesday to all relevant parties.
According to the circular, the dissolution affects political appointees whose appointments are based on legislation or tenure, as well as members of statutory commissions and governing councils whose tenures have not yet expired.
However, those who fall under these categories will only be exempt if they receive formal notification.
All political office holders affected by this decision are required to prepare detailed handover notes, documenting their responsibilities and key information, as well as return any government property, including utility or project vehicles, in their possession.
The handover is to be done in coordination with the Accounting Officer or Most Senior Director of their respective Ministries, Departments, and Agencies.
Furthermore, cabinet members are instructed to send a copy of their handover notes to the Permanent Secretary of the Cabinet Office no later than Friday, May 26, 2023.
This ensures a smooth transition of information and responsibilities between the outgoing and incoming administrations.
Additionally, all individuals affected by the dissolution are reminded to comply with the asset declaration provision outlined in paragraph 11 (1b), part one of the Fifth Schedule of the Nigerian Constitution.
This declaration is a necessary step in ensuring transparency and accountability during the transition process.
