The federal government has granted approval for the construction of a deep sea port in Ondo State, News About Nigeria reports.

The decision was made during a meeting of the Federal Executive Council, chaired by President Muhammadu Buhari, at the State House in Abuja on Wednesday.

The Ministry of Transportation, headed by Minister Muazu Jaji Sambo, presented a memo seeking approval for the operating license of the port.

This comes after years of efforts by the Ondo State Government to establish a deep sea port, starting with the unsuccessful Olokola project in 2004.

Upon assuming office as Governor in 2017, Oluwarotimi Akeredolu SAN, CON revived the initiative and further intensified it when Prince Ademola Adegoroye, an indigene of Ondo State, the then Minister of State held a position within the Federal Ministry of Transportation.

Governor Akeredolu had submitted a proposal to the federal government for the establishment of the port, and both the state and federal governments conducted thorough due diligence in the process.

The establishment of the deep sea port in Ondo State marks a significant milestone for the region’s economic development.

The approval from the Federal Executive Council demonstrates the government’s commitment to fostering maritime infrastructure and promoting trade activities in the state.

The construction of the port is expected to create numerous job opportunities and attract investments to the area.

It will serve as a hub for international trade, facilitating the import and export of goods, thereby boosting the local economy and generating revenue for both the state and federal governments.
