President Muhammadu Buhari has named Garba Baba Umar as a Senior Security Adviser on International Police Cooperation and Counter-terrorism, News About Nigeria reports.
Umar, the retiring Assistant Inspector General of Police, was appointed to ensure Nigeria maintains an important position and to allow him to finish his term as an Executive Member of the International Police Organization, INTERPOL.
In a statement released on Thursday, Senior Special Assistant on Media and Publicity, Malam Garba Shehu, said that Umar’s appointment followed a precedent set by AIG Kamal Subair (Rtd), who was kept in service by the Nigerian government after his retirement in 2018.
Umar’s appointment is aimed at leveraging his experience and expertise in security matters to benefit Nigeria, particularly in securing equipment for crime prevention, border management, and counter-terrorism.
President Buhari recognizes the significant contributions Umar has made during his tenure as an Executive Committee member and hopes that he will do more to ensure that more Nigerians get important positions within the INTERPOL in the remaining year of his term.
Umar’s new appointment as Senior Security Adviser takes effect on May 16, 2023, and will run until November 2024 when his tenure at INTERPOL comes to an end.
With his vast experience in policing and security matters, Umar is expected to play a crucial role in improving Nigeria’s security infrastructure and strengthening the country’s cooperation with other international law enforcement agencies.
This move by the Nigerian government is a positive step towards enhancing the country’s security and safety.
Umar’s appointment shows that the government recognizes the importance of investing in experienced and knowledgeable professionals in the security sector.
His role will be critical in helping Nigeria tackle the growing threat of terrorism and other criminal activities, which have caused significant harm to the country’s social and economic stability.
