The West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE) for the year 2023 will be held for seven weeks, beginning from May 8 and ending on June 23, News About Nigeria has learnt.
This was announced by the West African Examinations Council (WAEC) during a press briefing in Lagos on Thursday.
Head of National Office, Patrick Areghan, disclosed that a whopping 1,621,853 candidates from 20,851 public and private schools have registered for the upcoming examination.
This announcement coincides with the final stages of the 2023 edition of JAMB’s entrance exams into tertiary institutions.
JAMB conducts the Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME) nationwide.
The examination was scheduled to hold between April 25 and May 2, but has been extended to May 6 for candidates who missed the examination for genuine reasons.
In Nigeria, examination bodies such as WAEC, JAMB, and the National Examination Council (NECO) work together to adjust their calendars to avoid clashes of activities along the line.
This is because most candidates sit for different examinations conducted by these bodies.
To protect the interests of the candidates, the examination bodies have agreed to avoid clashes of timetables.
It is important to note that the WASSCE is a school-based examination for candidates who have completed their senior secondary education.
It is used as a requirement for admission into tertiary institutions in some West African countries.
The announcement of the 2023 WASSCE timetable gives candidates enough time to prepare adequately for the examination.
It is also a relief to candidates who might have been worried about a clash of timetables with other examinations.
