Withheld WASSCE Results: WAEC Sets Monday For Candidates To Start Re-Checking

The Nigeria Examinations Committee (NEC) concluded its 78th meeting on Wednesday, October 9, 2024, to address issues surrounding the recent West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE).

In an update shared by the West African Examinations Council (WAEC) on its social media platform, NEC announced that re-checking of examination results for candidates will commence on Monday, October 14, 2024.

The meeting, which began on October 7, tackled reports of malpractice and irregularities during the 2024 WASSCE for school candidates, discussing examination standards and policies to ensure future exams’ integrity.

WAEC said that further details would be included in a communiqué to be published soon.

News About Nigeria reported that this year’s WASSCE results were released on August 12, 2024, with results for over 215,000 candidates withheld due to suspected examination malpractices.

Students, parents, and educators are encouraged to await the forthcoming communiqué, which will clarify policy changes and updates relevant to Nigeria’s examination landscape.

The message read, “The West African Examinations Council is pleased to inform candidates who sat WASSCE for school candidates, 2024 that the result has officially been released today, Monday, August 12, 2024.”

News About Nigeria reported that over 73% of candidates achieved credits in at least five subjects, with or without English and math.

Additionally, around 72% obtained credits in five subjects, including English and math.

Compared to last year, there was a huge drop in the pass rate for candidates who achieved credits in five subjects, including English and math

The 2024 WASSCE results showed a 7.69% decrease in this category compared to 2023.

The Head of the Nigerian National Office (HNO) of the council, Dr. Amos Dangut, said the council will investigate the actual cause of the decreased performance.
