Former Emir of Kano, Sanusi Lamido Sanusi, has expressed regret that Vice President Yemi Osinbajo was not elected as Nigeria’s president.
According to Sanusi, the political system’s failure to elect Osinbajo has made Nigeria worse off.
Sanusi made the statement at the virtual launch of a book titled “Osinbajo Strides: Defining Moments of an Innovative Leader,” on May 2, News About Nigeria gathered.
The former Central Bank of Nigeria governor highlighted Osinbajo’s willingness to debate any matter and yield superior arguments in the current administration.
“And I dare say, we all agree that Nigeria is worse off for not having someone like him (Osinbajo) as president, but I do hope that he will be available to serve and to advise and to put in his best for the country and continue to do.
“So I’m sure he will, in whatever capacity he finds himself in the future, and maybe we’ll still be lucky to have him lead us at some point or take some leadership role as a statesman,” Sanusi said
Sanusi went on to say that Nigeria is worse off for not having someone like Osinbajo as president, but he hopes that Osinbajo will be available to serve and advise the country in the future.
He believes Osinbajo has the potential to take on a leadership role as a statesman.
It should be noted that Osinbajo had contested for the All Progressives Congress (APC) presidential primaries in 2022.
He contested against the President-elect, Bola Tinubu, and former Minister of Transportation, Rotimi Amaechi, among others.
However, Osinbajo’s decision to contest was heavily criticized by Tinubu’s loyalists, who saw him as a threat for contesting against Tinubu during the presidential primaries.
Sanusi’s comments about Osinbajo are likely to fuel speculation about Osinbajo’s political future, as many Nigerians see him as a competent and capable leader who could bring much-needed change to the country.
