The Sudan Old Students Association of Nigeria, SOSAN, has raised an alarm over the plight of Nigerian students trapped in the Sudan/African University without food, water, and money.

According to the President of the association, Aliyu Abdulkadir Abdulkadir, over 2,500 undocumented Nigerian students are in extreme danger as gun battles have already reached the university.

Reports reaching the association indicate that some female students have been raped while hundreds of students are stranded in Khartoum with no food, water, or shelter. Abdulkadir lamented that even the money said to have been set aside for the evacuation of the students is being tampered with, leaving the students in extreme danger.

He said, “reports reaching us is that right now although there is no case of losing lives, but some female students are said to be raped while gun battles have already reached within the university”.

The situation is dire as even the 5,000 students said to have been transported to Egypt are still at the border as they were not cleared to enter the country. Some were even dropped in the bush by their bus drivers for not paying their money. The plight of Nigerian students trapped in Sudan has become a humanitarian crisis that needs immediate attention.

Another old student of the Sudan University, Gambo Ado said, “for now there is no single voice speaking for the Nigerian students, monies sent to them did not reach them and most of them even sent their clips in the bushes shouting for help,”

The Nigerian government needs to step up and intervene to save the lives of its citizens and also investigate the alleged tampering of funds set aside for the evacuation of the students.
