The Anambra Command of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) has taken proactive measures to ensure the safety and security of residents and protect critical national infrastructure ahead of the planned nationwide protest on August 1.
News About Nigeria reports that the command has deployed a total of 1,190 personnel to safeguard government assets and maintain law and order before, during, and after the protest.
According to the Anambra State Commandant, Mr. Olatunde Maku, the deployment is in line with the directive from the Commandant-General of the corps, Dr. Ahmed Audi, to protect critical national assets and infrastructure.
He said that the personnel will be divided into two teams, with 350 personnel focusing on enforcing the anti-sit-at-home order on Monday, while 840 personnel will be responsible for preventing and responding to violent protests, lawlessness, and vandalism of national assets and infrastructure.
Maku stated that the NSCDC will not tolerate any violent activities that threaten the peaceful co-existence of residents or destroy national assets and infrastructure.
He assured that the corps will take proactive measures to prevent and counter such actions, ensuring the safety and security of residents and the protection of critical assets.
While acknowledging the rights of citizens to protest, Maku urged the organisers to operate within the law and warned individuals contemplating illegal acts during the protest that they would face severe legal consequences.
He specifically prohibited disrupting social and economic activities, particularly at strategic facilities like airports and hospitals, and hindering essential service providers from carrying out their duties.
