A two-storey building housing Saints Academy School located in Jos, the capital of Plateau, has collapsed.
News About Nigeria reports that the building caved in while the students were writing their third-term examination.
According to NAN, the ground floor contains mainly junior secondary school one (JSS1) students, while the senior students are on the top floors.
Speaking with NAN, Sunday Abdu, SEMA executive secretary in Plateau, said that the agency had mobilised its personnel and relevant agencies to the scene for emergency rescue efforts.
Abdu added that personnel from the Jos Metropolitan Development Board (JMDB) and other responders arrived at the scene with heavy machinery to clear the rubble and attempt to rescue the trapped children.
Eugene Nyelong, zonal coordinator of the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA), said that the number of casualties would be ascertained on completion of recuse operations.
Rescue operations are underway as security agencies and rescue operators battle with excavators to rescue students and teachers buried under the rubble
According to NAN, ambulances from various organisations, including the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA), Red Cross, Army, Police, and several others, are rushing rescued victims to different hospitals for medical attention.
The news of the collapsed building jolted the community as distraught residents and parents who had their wards in the school were said to have rushed to the institution to ascertain their fate.
However, newsmen who visited the school said many of the residents were seen wailing while security men and emergency workers were busy trying to pull survivors from the rubble.
