Nigerian music group, PSquare, comprising twin brothers, Peter and Paul Okoye, has claimed that the group’s temporary separation paved the way for other artists like Burna Boy, Davido, and Wizkid to take over the Afrobeats music scene.
News About Nigeria understands that the musical duo, in a recent interview, stated that they dominated the Nigerian and African music industry for nearly 14 years until their 2016 split.
However, they believed that if they had not separated for five years, they would still be on top.
During the interview, Peter boasted that PSquare had a huge influence on the music industry and that they were responsible for the global recognition of Afrobeats.
He acknowledged that other artists such as Burna Boy, Davido, and Wizkid had made a name for themselves, but he also credited PSquare for their success.
The brothers reunited in December 2021, five years after their public feud, and have since been performing together.
PSquare’s split in 2016 caused a deep family rift between the twin brothers, which led to their disbandment.
In reaction to claims that afrobeats gained global recognition when they were apart, Peter said; “Says who? They never said that.”
Paul added;“Let me tell you something, I’ve been hearing that. Even if they put it that way, it means some way God has his own way.
If we were there [together in the music industry] those people [dominant music stars] there would have never been light for them. And don’t forget, we’ve dominated the music industry for a long time. We held it down for nearly 13,14 years
The duo, who dominated the Nigerian and African music scene for many years, had several hits and won numerous awards.
However, their separation allowed other artists to take center stage, paving the way for the growth of Afrobeats music.
Despite their temporary hiatus, PSquare remains one of the most influential and successful music groups in Nigeria’s history.
