FG Files 20 Fresh Charges Against Emefiele, Seeks to Withdraw Illegal Possession of Firearm Case

Emefiele Arrives Court For Arraignment Over Fraud Charges

The Federal Government has filed 20 fresh charges against the embattled governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria, Godwin Emefiele as it sought on Tuesday to withdraw the illegal possession of firearms case it earlier filed against the suspended bank chief.

News About Nigeria reports that Mohammed Bakodo Abubakar the Director of Public Prosecutions at the Federal Ministry of Justice told that court on Tuesday that the new charges brought before the court by the federal government followed findings from fresh investigations conducted.

Mr. Abubakar detailed that the latest charges were filed at the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) High Court.

Mr. Emefiele is being accused of “conferring unlawful advantages” in one of the fresh charges brought against him by the government.

Recall that Mr Emefiele who is currently standing trials at the Federal High Court in Lagos for the illegal possession of firearms had been in the custody of the Department of States Services, DSS.

On the 25th of July, the court granted Mr Emefiele N20 million bail on a two-count charge of illegal possession of firearms and ammunition.

The court however directed that the embattled bank boss be held at the Ikoyi Correctional Centre until he fulfilled his bail terms.

Going against the court directives, the DSS rearrested Mr Emefiele after a tussle with men of NCoS at the court.

Justice Nicholas Oweibo led the court of the federal government’s decision to withdraw the firearm case and slam fresh charges against the apex bank chief.

Kicking against FG’s move Joseph Daudu, a member of the defence counsel argued that the government was yet to honor the court order that granted Mr Emefiele bail as such the application should not be taken.
