Governor Monday Okpebholo of Edo State has visited the Deputy Senate President, Senator Barau I Jibrin, to offer condolences over the recent killings of travelers in Uromi, Esan North East Local Government Area of Edo State.
The governor met the senator at his Maitama residence in Abuja on Monday.
The attack took place last Thursday when a mob intercepted a group of travelers heading to Kano State for Sallah celebrations.
The victims, who were hunters from Kano, were dragged from their vehicle and killed.
Governor Okpebholo condemned the killings and assured that justice would be served.
He confirmed that 14 suspects had been arrested and would be transferred to Abuja for further questioning.
He also stated that efforts were being made to support the victims’ families.
The Deputy Senate President welcomed the governor’s commitment to ensuring justice, saying the incident should not happen again.
He expressed confidence that those responsible would face the law, which would serve as a warning to others.
He also acknowledged the long history of peaceful coexistence between different communities in Edo State and hoped such violence would not repeat.
Authorities, including the Inspector General of Police and the Deputy Inspector General of Criminal Investigation Department, have taken up the case.
The governor also planned to meet with the Kano State governor to discuss the matter further.
“It’s unfortunate that it happened in our state. We are here to say, to let you and other people know that we are not happy.
“The president is doing something drastic about this. He’s not happy also. The IG has swung into action. The DIG CID is in charge. So far, they have arrested 14 suspects.
” So they are bringing them to Abuja for interrogation”, Okpebholo said.
