MultiChoice Rolls Back Price Increases Following Court Ruling, Customer Backlash

The Federal Competition and Consumer Protection Commission (FCCPC) has called MultiChoice Nigeria for an inquiry regarding its planned subscription fee increase set to begin on March 1, 2025.

In a statement by FCCPC’s Director of Corporate Affairs, Ondaje Ijagwu, the commission raised concerns over frequent price hikes in the pay-TV sector.

It warned against unfair market practices and exploitation of consumers.

MultiChoice’s chief executive officer is expected to appear before the commission on February 27, 2025, at its headquarters for an investigative hearing.

The FCCPC stated that if the company fails to justify its pricing decisions or is found guilty of anti-competitive behavior, enforcement actions, including penalties and corrective measures, will follow.

The commission assured Nigerians of its commitment to fair competition and consumer protection, working alongside industry regulators to ensure transparency and accountability in the sector.

“If MultiChoice fails to provide a satisfactory justification for its pricing strategy or is found in violation of fair competition principles, the commission will take necessary enforcement actions, including sanctions and corrective measures.”

Meanwhile, MultiChoice has introduced a support package for DStv and GOtv subscribers to ease the impact of the new pricing.

News About Nigeria learnt that customers who renew their subscriptions before expiry will be exempt from the increased rates for a limited period.

Additionally, the Step Up offer, which allows users to upgrade their packages at no extra cost, will continue until March 31, 2025.

MultiChoice also plans to reduce subscription fees for Showmax, its streaming service, on February 28, to provide users with more affordable access to entertainment, sports, and movies.
