The House of Representatives has urged the Nigeria Police Force and the Federal Road Safety Corps to begin arresting and prosecuting individuals using fake vehicle number plates.

News About Nigeria reports that move aims to curb rising criminal activities linked to fraudulent plates.

The decision was made after a motion was presented by Matthew Nwogu, a lawmaker representing Aboh Mbaise/Ngor Okpala Federal Constituency in Imo State, during a plenary session.

He pointed out that fake plates make it difficult to track vehicles used in crimes.

According to reports, many fake number plates bear tags of respected institutions like the Presidency, Nigeria Youth Council, and the National Association of Nigerian Students.

Criminal activities such as ‘One Chance’ robbery and kidnappings have been linked to these fraudulent plates.

With rising security concerns, lawmakers agreed that urgent action is needed.

The House directed the FRSC and police to track down both users and producers of fake plates.

It also called for stricter enforcement to ensure only registered vehicles are allowed on the roads.

The lawmaker said:

“Where the Lagos State Sector Commander of FRSC claimed that most fake number plates used for crime in the country, bear the tags of respected Institutions such as the Presidency, Nigeria Youth Council and National Association of Nigeria Students.”

“One Chance’ robbery and kidnapping incident in Nigeria “Are linked to fake vehicle plate numbers, with some falling victim while some met their untimely death in the hands of these criminals.

“The House is concerned that some number plates bearing the Presidency, Nigeria Youth Council, National Association of Nigerian Students, and other government agencies are, according to the FRSC Sector Command, Lagos, not registered in the Nigeria Vehicle Registration database”.
