Twenty-five persons have reportedly died from the outbreak of cholera in Sokoto State.
This was disclosed by the state Commissioner of Health, Hajiya Asabe Balarabe, during an interview on Monday.
She noted that the deaths were spread across three council areas of the state: Sokoto North, Silame, and Kware local government areas, adding that 15 others are currently hospitalized and receiving treatment.
The 15 active cases, according to the commissioner, were diagnosed through laboratory tests based on culture and sensitivity and confirmed to be active cases of the cholera outbreak.
She further disclosed that 1,160 people have been affected by the outbreak, with 25 victims having already succumbed to the disease.
However, she assured that rescue teams are collaborating with the state government to stem the spread of the disease and added that the state government has commenced the free purchase and distribution of drugs to local governments in the state.
She stated, “The rescue teams are working in collaboration with the state government to manage and prevent the further spread of the disease.
“The state government, in its response to the outbreak, directed the immediate purchase and distribution of drugs free of charge to 18 local government areas as an intervention to curb the continued spread of the disease.”
She commended the state government for its efforts in ensuring that the outbreak is stopped and that the people have access to good healthcare.
News About Nigeria reports that cholera, also known as Gastroenteritis, is a dangerous disease that should be treated immediately upon discovery to prevent death.
