Super Eagles player and top striker, Victor Boniface, has opened up about how he feels regarding his exclusion from the shortlist for the Confederation of African Football Men’s Player of the Year award, also known as the CAF Awards, News About Nigeria reports.
Recall that the Confederation announced its shortlist in October, where Nigerian stars Ademola Lookman and William Troost-Ekong both made the nominees list.
However, Boniface and Victor Osimhen were absent from the final 10 nominees.
Reacting to this, Boniface, in an interview with sports journalist Pooja on Sunday, expressed disappointment at being excluded.
He stated that he had a great run and an amazing season last year and should have been part of the nominees for the award.
However, he noted that he is not sad about the outcome and is happy for his teammates who made the list.
He added that while awards are not his priority, he remains focused on improving his performance.
He stated, “I’m not sad, but disappointed because I had an amazing season last year, so for me not to be there… maybe the award is for African players in AFCON, I don’t know. But in general, if it’s for African Player of the Year, I think I had a great season.”
“I don’t need to prove to anybody; I don’t really care about awards and stuff. But of course, as a football player, I want to improve, I want to do more for myself.”
Other footballers who made it to the list include Morocco’s Achraf Hakimi and Sofiane Rahimi, Algeria’s Amine Gouiri, Ivory Coast’s Simon Adingra, DR Congo’s Chancel Mbemba, Guinea’s Serhou Guirassy, Burkina Faso’s Edmond Tapsoba, and South Africa’s Ronwen Williams.
