A Rwandan soldier on Wednesday opened fire in a bar and killed five civilians in Nyamasheke district, Western Province of the country.
News About Nigeria gathered that the soldier committed the crime following an alleged altercation with a group of people he was hanging out with in the bar.
Confirming the incident, the Rwandan Defence Force (RDF) identified the gunman as a 39-year-old sergeant Minani Gervais.
The RDF further revealed that the suspect had been arrested and would face the rot of the law.
The Force also expressed its sincere condolences to the families of the deceased while praying that their souls will rest in peace.
The statement by RDF reads, “Rwanda Defence Force deeply regrets the tragic incident that occurred in a bar in Rusharara Cell, Karambi Sector of Nyamasheke District, where Sgt Minani Gervais (39 years), allegedly fatally shot five civilians in the early morning hours of 13 November 2024.
“The RDF has arrested the suspect and will take necessary legal action against him. The RDF extends its deepest condolences to the grieving families and friends of the victims.”
Also speaking about the tragedy on the Rwandan National Radio, Brig Gen Ronald Rwivanga, urged residents to remain calm, promising that the situation is currently under control.
He also noted that investigations are currently ongoing and justice will take its course as there is no reason why anyone no matter who they are should kill five people.
“There is absolutely no reason one should shoot and kill five people. We are going to take the necessary measures and RDF would like to condole the affected families,” Brig. Gen Rwivanga said.
