2023 Election: My Political Agreement With Peter Obi Ended Immediately After Supreme Court Verdict, Says Doyin Okupe

Former Director-General of the Labour Party’s 2023 election, Doyin Okupe has declared that he would never support Peter Obi’s presidential ambition again, News About Nigeria reports.

This decision according to him is because the Labour Party flag-bearer in the last election disrespected Yorubas.

The politician made the declaration on Channels Television’s “Politics Today” in response to Obi’s recent comments on the economic situation in Nigeria.

While reacting to the current economic challenges bedevilling the nation, the former Anambra State Governor had said, “Let us talk about what is happening today. Rice is about N100,000. We are not even sure where we are going to be. ‘It’s our turn’, ‘he is a Yoruba man’ — ask the people in Ogun, here is there any place you people buy bread cheaper?”

This comment which had caused a stir on social media also triggered Okupe who noted that Obi through his comment belittled the South-West.

He further noted that Obi’s remark was an “insult” to people in the South-West, adding that despite receiving support from prominent Yoruba leaders like former President Olusegun Obasanjo during his presidential bid the LP Chieftain could still speak ill of the region.

He said, “When Obi made that statement, it insulted us. I am a Yoruba man; I left everything and followed Obi. For the first time, Obasanjo left his circle of influence and deviated to support Obi. I do not regret supporting Peter Obi. But now I cannot do it again.”

“If all these eminent Yoruba people supported you, why now bring us down publicly? It is wrong.”
