One person has been confirmed dead after gunmen suspected to be cultists attacked Obele, a community in Emohua Local Government Area of Rivers State.

News About Nigeria gathered that the gunmen also set ablaze the house of a former councillor in the state, Chigozie Woka.

The deadly gunfire attack also left four other people injured with varying degrees of injuries.

The deceased, a vigilante member, is said to have been part of the Ogba-Egbema-Ndoni Local Government Area Peace and Advisory Committee.

The tragic incident was confirmed by the Rivers State Police Spokesperson, Grace Iringe-Koko, who spoke to journalists on Friday.

“Yes, I can confirm that one person was killed and a house destroyed,” she stated.

The Police Spokesperson further revealed that the incident occurred on Wednesday, adding that the Police have already launched an investigation into the matter.

She also stated that the Police would ensure that the perpetrators of the heinous act are arrested and brought to justice.

On his part, the councillor whose house was set ablaze accused a notorious cultist in the area, known simply as ‘Naked’, of being the mastermind of the attack.

He further alleged that Naked’s decision to set his home on fire could be linked to his cooperation with security agents in the area.

Woka said, “He is not even from Obele; he comes here to seek refuge. He called me recently, accusing me of working with security agencies to chase him out. He came to my house with his boys, and they destroyed everything. What crime did I commit? That I’m working with security agencies?”
