Ten people have lost their lives after a storey building collapsed at Jegede in the Olunloyo area of Ibadan, the Oyo State capital, News About Nigeria reports.
This was disclosed in a statement by the General Manager of Oyo State Fire Service, Yemi Akinyinka, on Thursday.
He stated that the unfortunate incident occurred early on Thursday morning, leaving 10 dead and seven others hospitalised.
Akinyinka stated that the service had gotten a distress call around 2am from residents of the area that a building had collapsed, trapping many under the rubble.
Seven people were also rescued with varying degrees of injury from the venue of the incident.
He further noted that adequate security has been emplaced in the area to prevent hoodlums from taking over the incident scene, adding that this will also enable the lives and properties of other residents to be secure.
Akinyinka assured that investigation is ongoing and will hopefully reveal the cause of the collapse.
He stated, “May I inform you that Oyo State Fire Services Agency received a distressed call at around 2 am this morning at Jegede, Olunloyo area, Ibadan of which 10 persons have been recovered from the debris of the collapsed building, while seven persons were rescued alive. Rescue operation is still going on.
“Adequate security has currently been emplaced in the area to prevent hoodlums from taking over the incident scene and as well protect the lives and property of other residents within the Jurisdiction.
“Investigation is ongoing at the moment to unravel the possible circumstances that could have led to the incident.”
