Asari Dokubo, former Niger Delta militant leader and staunch supporter of President Bola Tinubu, has announced plans to cut political ties with Tinubu and align instead with the Northern region ahead of Nigeria’s 2027 general elections, News About Nigeria reports.
In a series of videos shared widely online, Dokubo accused Tinubu of betrayal, despite his efforts to support the president’s successful 2023 campaign.
Dokubo claimed he invested his personal funds and resources to gather votes for Tinubu, only to feel “betrayed” by his administration. Reflecting on his previous support, he reminded viewers of his public commitment to hold Tinubu accountable if he underperformed as president.
In the video, Dokubo apologised to Nigerian elders, saying, “They were not wrong in forming an alliance with the North, and as young men, we will now start that same alliance.”
He said he intends to establish new alliances with the North because the Tinubu he knows now is not the Tinubu he knew before.
Dokubo said that he now views an alliance with the Northern region as the best path forward for the Ijaw people.
He added that the Yorubas betrayed the Ijaw people, and they can no longer work with the tribe.
“From today, I will work and form an alliance with the North. President Tinubu betrayed me after I spent all my money and emptied my bank account campaigning for him. The Tinubu I know now isn’t the Tinubu I used to know. We will take this message across that only the Northerners can work with the Ijaw people.
“We can’t work with Yoruba people; they are a betrayal to us. We risked our lives by voting and doing everything, and this is what we get?”
