Sokoto Government Vows To Combat Vandalism In Schools

The Sokoto State Government has announced that it is committed to enforcing strict penalties against anyone caught vandalising school property.

News About Nigeria reports that this pledge was made by Umar Tambuwal, the Executive Chairman of the Sokoto State Universal Basic Education Board, during an unplanned visit to Marafa Danbaba Model Primary School in the Sokoto South Local Government Area on Tuesday.

According to a statement from the board’s Public Relations Officer, Murtala Danladi, Tambuwal said that the government is dedicated to protecting educational facilities.

He assured that those responsible for damaging school property would face severe legal consequences.

Tambuwal stated, “The Executive Chairman pledged to provide more security and potable water, as well as to upgrade the school to the status of Junior Secondary School very soon.”

He also stated that there are ongoing improvements, including the construction of new classrooms and toilet facilities, in line with the current administration’s efforts under Governor Ahmad Aliyu Sokoto.

During his visit, Tambuwal and his team assessed the school’s conditions. The entourage included board members Alhaji Abdulkadir Gada and Alhaji Garba Sarki, along with other principals from the board.

In a different development, Sokoto State Governor, Ahmed Aliyu, granted clemency to 113 inmates at the Sokoto Correctional Centre to mark Nigeria’s 64th Independence Anniversary.

This pardon was executed under the provisions of Section 212 of the 1999 Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria (as amended) and was announced on Tuesday by the state’s Attorney General and Commissioner for Justice, Nasiru Binji, on behalf of the governor.

The clemency included the unconditional release of 67 inmates.

Additionally, 22 inmates on death row had their sentences commuted to life imprisonment, while another 22 serving life sentences had their terms reduced to 25 years. Two other inmates received a two-year reduction in their sentences.

Governor Aliyu urged the released inmates to use this second chance to reintegrate positively into society.
