Tanker Explosion Kills 94 In Jigawa

An explosion from an overturned fuel tanker in Jigawa State has resulted in the deaths of at least 94 people, with approximately 50 others injured, according to police reports.

News About Nigeria gathered that the incident occurred overnight on a major expressway in the town of Majia, where residents reportedly gathered to collect fuel spilling from the overturned tanker.

Police spokesperson Lawan Shiisu Adam confirmed the death toll, cautioning that it could still rise as emergency teams assess the scene.

The tanker reportedly swerved to avoid an oncoming truck before it overturned.

The crowd gathered to scoop up the spilled fuel, which authorities believe led to the high number of casualties when the explosion ignited.

The blaze continued into the early hours of Wednesday.

The spokesperson said that the injured were receiving medical attention at the Ringim General Hospital while a mass burial of the victims would be held by 9 a.m. on Wednesday.
