In a recent address, Umar Damagum, the acting National Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), criticised Nigerians who exchanged votes for food items and clothing in the 2023 elections.
According to him, they now face the harshest consequences.
Damagum said that this situation should serve as a cautionary tale, as it is important to choose credible leaders over short-term gains like “spaghetti and wrappers.”
“The APC was never ready to govern, so what good could possibly come from them?” he queried.
“Those who accepted spaghetti and wrappers to bring in this government are suffering the most, and this should serve as a lesson. We must seek credible, proven, and tested leaders who are genuinely prepared to govern, not those who simply say, “Emilokan” ” he stated.
Following a closed-door meeting with PDP stakeholders, Damagum questioned the All Progressives Congress’s (APC) preparedness to govern, adding that policies from President Bola Tinubu’s administration have only worsened the challenges Nigerians face.
He warned against voting for leaders based on fleeting incentives, urging citizens to prioritise experienced and reliable candidates.
Meanwhile, Damagum has been embroiled in internal PDP conflicts.
News About Nigeria reported that the Federal High Court in Abuja recently issued an order preventing the party’s National Executive Committee (NEC) and Board of Trustees (BoT) from suspending him, following a lawsuit by Senator Umar El-Gash Maina to challenge Damagum’s removal.
This decision comes shortly after a faction within the PDP’s National Working Committee suspended both Damagum and PDP National Secretary Samuel Anyanwu, citing alleged anti-party activities.
