Nigerian Navy Shuts Down 124 Illegal Refineries

The Nigerian Navy announced that its ongoing “Operation Delta Sanity” in the Niger Delta has shut down 124 illegal refining sites and arrested 55 suspects over the past four months.

Flag Officer Commanding Central Naval Command, Rear Admiral Samson Bura, shared these updates with reporters in Yenagoa, Bayelsa State, News About Nigeria reports.

During the operation, the Navy also seized 116 wooden boats, dismantled 543 dugout pits, removed 64 storage tanks, and arrested six vessels.

The operation, launched on January 10, 2024, was initially set to last through July but has now been extended by an additional 90 days on the directive of the Chief of Naval Staff to further combat oil theft.

Rear Admiral Bura noted that the crackdown had increased Nigeria’s oil production, with the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPCL) confirming an output boost from approximately 1.3 million barrels per day in June 2024 to 1.7 million barrels per day.

The Navy’s approach combines advanced technology, intelligence gathering, and community engagement initiatives to deter illegal activities.

“Since the extension in July 2024, a total of 55 suspects have been arrested, while about 124 illegal refinery sites were deactivated in accordance with extant regulations.

“Furthermore, a total of 116 wooden boats, 543 dugout pits, and 64 storage tanks were deactivated while 6 vessels were arrested. Additionally, several items and equipment used in the construction of illegal refineries were seized.

“These achievements have impacted positively on the nation’s oil production. According to the NNPCL, the country currently produces 1.7 million barrels per day. This constitutes a significant increase compared to about 1.3 million barrels per day in June 2024,” Bura said.

Acknowledging the collaborative efforts of security agencies, community leaders, and maritime stakeholders, Bura expressed gratitude for their continued support in the fight against crude oil theft.
