Explosion Hits APC Secretariat In Port Harcourt Ahead Of LG Elections

In the early hours of Saturday, a powerful explosion, suspected to be dynamite, rocked the All Progressives Congress (APC) secretariat along Aba Road in Port Harcourt, Rivers State.

News About Nigeria gathered that the blast caused huge damage, shattering buildings and other properties at the site.

The explosion brought down the main gate of the secretariat and destroyed several doors and windows.

This marks the second attack on the Chief Tony Okocha-led faction of the APC’s secretariat this year.

The incident occurred just hours before local government elections in Rivers State, scheduled for today.

On Friday, the Rivers State Independent Electoral Commission (RSIEC) confirmed that all sensitive materials for the election had been distributed to the various local government areas.

A viral video circulating on social media shows workers inspecting the site to assess the extent of the damage.

When contacted, Grace Iringe-Koko, spokesperson for the Rivers State Police Command, stated that she had yet to receive a full report on the explosion but promised to provide more information.

The APC has not yet issued an official statement regarding the attack.

Meanwhile, the local elections remain controversial. A Federal High Court ruling in Abuja had barred the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) from releasing the voter register to RSIEC and ordered the police and the Department of State Services (DSS) not to provide security for the election.

Despite the ruling, Governor Siminalayi Fubara has insisted on proceeding with the elections, even though his party, the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), is not participating.

In the early hours of Friday, Fubara visited the RSIEC office in Port Harcourt, accusing the police of attempting to sabotage the election process by seizing materials, a claim the police have denied.
