Hyacinth Alia, the Governor of Benue State, revealed on Thursday that the state is ready to handle any eventuality that will arise from the release of water from Cameroon’s Lagdo dam.
According to the governor, though they are not praying for a flood, the state is ready and equal to the task.
News About Nigeria reports that, Governor Alia declared this following the Federal Government’s warning on Tuesday that Cameroonian authorities are planning to release water from the Lagdo Dam.
The Nigeria Hydrological Services Agency had also listed flood-prone states as Adamawa, Benue, Nasarawa, Taraba, Kogi, Anambra, Edo, Delta, Bayelsa, Cross Rivers, and Rivers.
Lagdo dam is located in the Northern Province of Cameroon, on the Benue River, in the Niger basin.
Reacting to this while speaking to journalists after a closed-door meeting with President Bola Tinubu at the Aso Rock Villa, Abuja, Alia noted that his administration is proactive and has put measures in place in case of a flood.
He said, “We pray that the flood doesn’t come, but if it does, we are definitely equal to the task. So before the dredging, there are a number of things on the table: exploring to see which of the best options before the Federal Government comes in to support us.
“So, for the record, we’re not just waiting. We have a statement from the emergency management agency and team. They have the capacity to take charge of all these things, and they are already armed. We pray that the flood doesn’t come, but if it does, we are definitely equal to the task.”
