Lagos Seals Idera Market In Oshodi Over Poor Hygiene

The popular Idera market, located at Oshodi, has been sealed by the Lagos State government through the State Environmental Sanitation Corps (LAGESC), popularly known as KAI, on Thursday, News About Nigeria reports.

According to the state government, the decision to seal the market is because traders are contravening environmental laws.

Speaking for LAGESC, KAI Corps Marshal, Major Olaniyi Cole (retd), noted that the closure of the market was part of intensified efforts aimed at ensuring adherence to environmental cleanliness across registered markets in the state.

He also decried the unimpressive level of hygiene at the market, which he described as capable of causing illnesses and disease outbreaks to market vendors and buyers alike.

He said, ‘‘Our operatives stationed across the Oshodi division during routine market monitoring identified the filth, unhygienic practices, and indiscriminate dumping of refuse around the Idera Market area, which prompted us to seal off the market until further notice. Markets must imbibe hygienic practices to prevent the spread of diseases.”

Cole also lamented the fact that the leadership of the market could not provide a proper waste collection for traders, making them dump heaps of refuse almost everywhere at the market.

He, therefore, warned that any market found erring will be sealed off until total compliance is achieved.

The Corp Marshal further reiterated the state government’s commitment to building a clean Lagos, noting they would not relent until they had built the Lagos of their dreams.

Cole further enjoined traders and residents alike to partner with them in ensuring a clean and hygienic environment for all.
