Randy Waldrum Resigns As Super Falcons Coach

Randy Waldrum has resigned as the head coach of Nigeria’s female football team, the Super Falcons, News About Nigeria reports.

In a letter dated September 12th, Waldrum cited health issues with his wife as the reason he’s resigning from the job.

He stated that it has been difficult following the Olympics, as a result of his wife’s ill health and the worries that come with it.

He noted that his resignation is not out of the blues, as he has given it a lot of thought and consideration and considers it the best decision for now.

The 67-year-old American tactician also stated that this will avail the Nigeria Football Federation, NFF, enough time to be able to find a new coach and manager for the Super Falcons.

The statement reads in part, “It’s been a very difficult few weeks following the Olympics, with my wife’s health issues, and the worries that obviously come with that. After much thought and consideration, I am hereby resigning my position as head coach of the Super Falcons. This will allow the NFF ample time to find the next manager to take over this incredible squad.”

The American former professional soccer player is the current head coach of the University of Pittsburgh Panthers women’s soccer team.

In October 2017, Waldrum was appointed to be technical adviser and head coach of the Nigeria women’s national team, and was expected to take charge of the team ahead of the 2018 Africa Women Cup of Nations qualification tournament.

However, he turned down the role and was not appointed coach.

On October 5, 2020, Waldrum was appointed the head coach of the Nigeria women’s national team, barely three years after turning down the role.
