Benson Upah, spokesperson for the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), has issued a warning about the future of fuel prices in Nigeria, suggesting that they could rise to as high as N5,000 per litre, News About Nigeria reports.
In a recent interview with Weekend Trust, Upah expressed concerns over the recent spike in petrol prices and criticised the Federal Government’s failure to reinstate subsidies as promised.
He said that the NLC’s agreement with President Bola Tinubu’s administration regarding fuel subsidies has not been honoured.
“Subsidy restoration was never implemented as claimed by the government,” Upah said.
“With the current trajectory of price increases, we might face a scenario where fuel costs could reach N5,000 per litre. We hope this does not become reality, but it remains a possibility if current trends continue.”
Meanwhile, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu addressed the issue of rising petrol prices during a meeting with Nigerians in China on Friday.
This engagement capped off his official visit to Beijing, where he discussed the economic challenges facing Nigeria, including the recent surge in fuel prices which have climbed to between N897 and N1,000 per litre.
Tinubu attributed the price hikes to the tough economic decisions made by his administration.
Reflecting on his trip, he described it as successful and beneficial, despite the ongoing economic hardships back home.
In his address, Tinubu noted the contrast between Nigeria and China in terms of infrastructure and services.
He suggested that sacrifices from Nigerians could pave the way for improvements in essential services such as roads, electricity, and education in Nigeria, similar to those enjoyed in China.
