The Kaduna police command says its operatives have apprehended three suspects involved in Automated Teller Machine (ATM) swap in Kaduna.
News About Nigeria reports that a statement released by the Command’s Spokesperson, ASP Mansir Hassan, revealed that the suspects were apprehended on August 27 following a tip-off.
The suspects, identified as Umar Ya’u, Abdullahi Bukar, and Hussaini Sulaiman, were known to frequent ATM locations and offer assistance to users who appeared uncertain about operating the machines.
Unbeknownst to the victims, the suspects would swap their ATM cards, enabling them to make unauthorised withdrawals.
Hassan said: “On Aug. 27, at about 23:00 hours, following a credible intelligence, police operatives nab three suspects involved in ATM Card Swap Fraud, through a well-coordinated operation.”
He said the suspects included, Umar Ya’u of Zoo Road Kano, Abdullahi Bukar of Tudun Wada Kaduna, and Hussaini Sulaiman of Zoo Road, Kano.
He added that the suspects were known for loitering around ATMs, where they pretended to assist individuals who appeared unfamiliar with operating the machines.
“In doing so, they would deceitfully swap the victims’ ATM cards, allowing them to carry out unauthorised withdrawals.
“54 ATM cards of different banks and a POS machine were recovered from the suspects, which they confessed to getting from defrauding multiple victims across Kano, Kaduna, and Zaria,” he said.
The suspects confessed to obtaining these cards through deceitful means, targeting multiple victims across several cities.
The Commissioner of Police, Mr. Audu Dabigi, has assured the public of the command’s dedication to protecting the community.
He also warned individuals to be cautious of unsolicited help at ATM points and to report any suspicious activity to the police promptly.
