ASUU Threatens Indefinite Strike Over Federal Government's Failure to Honour 2009 Agreement

The Federal Government and the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) have postponed their meeting, scheduled for Monday, August 26, 2024, News About Nigeria reports.

The President of ASUU, Emmanuel Osodeke, confirmed this on Monday, according to Channels Television.

On Friday, the Minister of Education announced that a meeting between the FG and ASUU would be held on Monday, but that is no longer the case.

The meeting has been rescheduled and will now take place on Wednesday, although no reason was given for the change of date.

Recall that last Tuesday, ASUU issued a strike notice to the federal government following a National Executive Committee (NEC) meeting held on Monday, August 19, at the University of Ibadan.

Following resolutions reached at the union’s national executive council meeting, public university lecturers threatened to go on a nationwide strike over the Federal Government’s failure to honour the 2009 renegotiated agreement.

Among the various issues the union has been pressing for are the emergency revitalisation fund for public universities, payment of outstanding earned academic allowances, and the release of withheld salaries, promotion arrears, and third-party deductions from members.

The other issues include the stoppage of illegal recruitments, the proliferation of public universities/abuse of universities’ laws, regulations, and processes, and the removal of universities from the Treasury’s single account, among others.

The planned meeting was scheduled to enable both the Federal Government and the ASUU leadership to meet, discuss, and prevent another strike from happening.

The outcome of the meeting will, however, be made known on Wednesday.
