Senator Ned Nwoko, the senator representing the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Delta State, has called for the establishment of a National Social Security Agency, News About Nigeria reports.
He made his call in an open letter addressed to President Bola Tinubu in Abuja on Monday.
He urged the President to scrap out the Ministry of Humanitarian Affairs and replace it with the National Social Security Agency.
Nwoko opined that the creation of the National Social Security Agency would guarantee the rights and dignity of Nigeria’s most vulnerable citizens.
According to him, the creation of the agency, under the Office of the President will not only guarantee the rights and dignity of Nigeria’s most vulnerable citizens but also align the country with global standards in the realistic and far-reaching implementation of fundamental principles of livelihood
In the letter titled, ‘’Reimagining Nigeria’s Social Safety Net: A Call to Replace the Ministry of Humanitarian Affairs with a National Social Security Agency Under the Office of the President,” Nwoko stated that the pervasive issues of poverty and the societal decay it perpetuates have reached a level of urgency that could no longer be ignored.
It reads in part, “It will also align our nation with global standards in the realistic and far-reaching implementation of fundamental principles of livelihood, exemplified by equity, enterprise, and engagement.
“In this period of socio-economic difficulties, the agency has the potential to address the needs of the people and profoundly manifest your administration’s commitment to good governance.
“I, therefore, urge you to take action for the common good of empowering the citizens and charting a bold new course in patriotic service to the nation.
“The cries of hunger, now echoing in the streets, represent far more than just a lack of food.
“They are the voices of millions of Nigerians who have been stripped of their dignity, left to survive in a system that has failed them repeatedly.
“These are not merely protests; they are a collective outcry against the indignity of living without the certainty of basic needs, without hope for a better future.”
