A tragedy struck Lagos Island on Friday morning as a 7-storey building on Sanni Adewale Street in Lagos Island Local Government Area, Lagos State, got engulfed in fire, News About Nigeria reports.
The building, which houses several shops, reportedly caught fire in the early hours of the morning and the fire was said to have started around 5:17 a.m., causing panic in the area.
The Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service is, however, at the scene and is actively working to extinguish the blaze, which has already destroyed items valued at millions of naira.
The Director of the Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service, Margaret Adeseye, who is at the scene, disclosed that firefighters from the Ebute Elefun, Sari, and Lekki 1 stations were dispatched immediately after receiving a distress call by residents around the building and arrived at the scene by 5:33 a.m.
She assured the people that the situation is currently under control, adding that no further damage will be done.
She also stated that ventilation process has begun in the area to ensure safety in the area and urged the people not to panic or entertain fear.
Fortunately, as at the time of the report, there have been no casualties.
“Thanks to the swift actions of the Lagos State Firefighters, the situation is now under control.
“Ventilation efforts are currently underway to ensure the safety of all in the area.
“Preliminary investigations suggest the fire was triggered by an electrical surge. Fortunately, no casualties have been reported,” she stated.
