Peter Obi, the presidential candidate of the Labour Party (LP) in the last election, has condemned the invasion of the national secretariat of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) by security.

Obi, in a statement by his media adviser, Dr. Yunusa Tanko, noted that raiding the office of the labour union, especially at an ‘unholy hour’, was uncalled for.

He further stated that instead of invading the NLC secretariat, the security agencies involved would have invited them, adding that they would have honoured the invitation because of how law-abiding they are.

Yunusa said, “The NLC as an organisation fights for the rights of a majority of Nigerian workers, and their officials are accessible. If any of our security agencies desire to see them, the proper thing to do is to invite them, and I know they are law-abiding they will honour such invitations. Invading their offices, especially after office hours, is an attempt to intimidate them; this has no place in a democracy.”

News About Nigeria earlier reported that security operatives, believed to be from the Department of State Services and the Nigeria Police Force, had on Wednesday night invaded the NLC secretariat.

Giving details on the invasion, the NLC spokesperson, Benson Upah, revealed that the operatives arrested the security guards on duty, forcing them to hand over keys to the offices on the second floor.

He had also disclosed that the operatives broke into the floor, ransacked the bookshop, and stole hundreds of books and publications.

The DSS has, however, denied being behind the raid.
