Immigration Suspends Officer For Unethical Behaviour

The Nigeria Immigration Service (NIS) has suspended one of its officers, Okpravero Ufuoma, an Assistant Superintendent of Immigration II (ASI II), for allegedly engaging in unethical behaviour.

News About Nigeria reports that the officer was captured on video soliciting financial gratification from a traveller, which led to their indefinite suspension pending disciplinary procedures.

The Comptroller General of NIS, Mrs. Kemi Nandap, condemned the officer’s actions, stating that they do not align with the values and ethics of professionalism upheld by the service.

The incident, which was shared on social media, undermines the ongoing efforts to enhance service standards and improve the reputation of the NIS.

Mrs. Nandap assured that the NIS has a zero-tolerance policy for corruption and will identify and remove corrupt elements within its ranks.

She said the service is working towards achieving excellence in service delivery, in line with the Federal Government’s ‘Renewed Hope Agenda.’

“To prevent similar incidents, the NIS is installing electronic gates (e-gates) at all international airports to facilitate smoother travel for passengers. The public is encouraged to report any form of misconduct or corruption by NIS officers to the appropriate authorities,” the statement said.

The NIS boss reiterated the NIS’s commitment to identifying and removing corrupt elements within its ranks, in line with its zero-tolerance for corruption policy.

Nandap added that electronic gates (e-gates) were being installed at all international airports to facilitate smoother travel for passengers and prevent incidents like the one involving the suspended officer.

She urged the public to report any form of misconduct or corruption by its officers to the appropriate authorities.
