A Jigawa State magistrate court, presided over by Magistrate Auwalu Sani, has ruled that a group of protesters be held in custody for a period of two weeks.
News About Nigeria reports that this decision was made in response to the recent violent protests that took place in the state, which resulted in the loss of two lives, numerous injuries, and widespread property damage.
The protests, which initially began as peaceful demonstrations against bad governance, escalated into chaos, with buildings being set on fire and properties worth millions of Naira being looted.
Among those remanded is Umar Danjani, who is suspected of leading the violent protests.
He will be held at Birnin Kudu Prison for the duration of the two-week period.
In addition to Danjani, the Police Command has arrested a total of 68 individuals suspected of participating in the violent protests, which took place across various local government areas, including Dutse, Kiyawa, Kazaure, and Babura.
The police have also recovered a significant amount of looted items, including 49 bags of fertilizer, 15 bundles of mosquito nets, and other valuable items.
The recovery of these items is a significant step towards restoring order and holding those responsible for the violence accountable.
The decision to remand the protesters is a clear indication that the authorities will not tolerate violent behavior and will take necessary measures to ensure public safety and maintain law and order.
The two-week remand period will allow for further investigation and legal proceedings to take place, with the aim of bringing those responsible for the violence to justice.
