Obiageli Ezekwesili, a former Nigerian minister and prominent public figure, has expressed deep sorrow over Onyeka Onwenu’s passing.
News About Nigeria earlier reported that the Nigerian singer and actress Onyeka Onwenu, known for her exceptional contributions to music, film, and journalism, passed away at the age of 72.
The beloved artist died on Tuesday night after performing at an event on Banana Island, Lagos.
Onwenu reportedly collapsed following her performance at the birthday celebration of Stella Okoli, the owner of Emzor Pharmaceuticals.
She was quickly taken to a hospital on Victoria Island, where she was pronounced dead.
In a heartfelt statement, Ezekwesili highlighted Onwenu’s multifaceted career, noting her brilliance in journalism during her early years at NTA, where she served her National Youth Service.
She praised Onwenu’s investigative prowess, particularly her renowned BBC World documentary “A Squandering of Riches,” which explored governance issues in Nigeria.
Ezekwesili also celebrated Onwenu’s achievements as a songwriter, musician, actor, and producer, stating that she excelled in every field she ventured into.
She said, “Shocking and extremely tragic news of the passing of our dear #OnyekaOnwenu – The Elegant Stallion – as we came to know her.
“Our sister, Onyeka was as cerebral as she was gifted in the Arts and quite a captivating journalist in the 80s when she returned home and did her National Youth Service with NTA #NTANewsNow . Her newscasting skills were unmatched.
“Her epic #BBCWorld documentary titled “A Squandering of Riches” will remain one of the greatest narration of the same issues that continue to ail Governance in Nigeria today.
“How about her giant strides as a songwriter, a musician, a performer, actor, producer! Distinction!!.”
Ezekwesili described Onwenu’s death as a profound loss for Nigeria, noting the significant void left in the nation’s cultural and artistic landscape.
She offered condolences to Onwenu’s family, including her two sons and siblings, and wished them peace and comfort in their time of grief.
