Take It Back Movement Accuses UBA Of Freezing Account Over Planned Protests

The Take It Back Movement (TIB), organisers of the upcoming nationwide protests, has accused the United Bank for Africa (UBA) of freezing their account.

The protests, set to begin on August 1, 2024, are aimed at addressing various governance issues and may extend beyond the initial ten days depending on developments.

In a tweet on Friday, TIB claimed that the account was frozen on the orders of the Department of State Services (DSS).

The group condemned the action as unlawful and demanded that the account be unfrozen within 24 hours.

They also threatened legal action against UBA if their demands were not met.

The tweet read, “It has now come to our attention that @UBAGroup has frozen our account on the instructions of the DSS over our involvement in the forthcoming protest. We describe this action as lawless, and demand our account be unfrozen immediately within the next 24 hours, without which a legal action will be instituted against @UBAGroup.”

News About Nigeria reported that the organisers of the protest movements, #DaysOfRage and #EndBadGovernanceInNigeria, formally requested permission to use Eagle Square in Abuja as the main venue for their demonstrations.

In their letter to the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, the organisers requested unrestricted access to Eagle Square, citing the need for a venue that could support continuous protest activities, including provisions for power, sanitation, and security.

They also said there is the possibility of the protest extending beyond the initial ten days due to ongoing grievances linked to governance issues.

The organisers called for protesters to be treated with respect and provided the same facilities that have been available to dignitaries who previously used the space.
