A high-level meeting is underway, convened by the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, George Akume, to address the impending nationwide demonstration against economic difficulties.

News About Nigeria understands that there have been reports of a youth-led nationwide protest over the rising cost of living and economic hardship.

The protest is reportedly slated for August 1 to 15.

The gathering, held behind closed doors, has brought together the entire cabinet of President Bola Tinubu, comprising over 40 ministers.

Notable attendees include Nyesom Wike, Minister of the Federal Capital Territory; Yusuf Tuggar, Minister of Foreign Affairs; and Zephaniah Jisalo, Minister of Special Duties.

Other key figures present are Tahir Mamman, Minister of Education; Abubakar Bagudu, Minister of Budget and Planning; Wale Edun, Minister of Finance; and Mohammed Idris, Minister of Information.

Additionally, Bello Matawalle, Minister of Defence; David Umahi, Minister of Works; and Nuhu Ribadu, National Security Adviser, are also part of the meeting.

This emergency gathering comes on the heels of President Tinubu’s appeal to Nigerians on Tuesday, urging them to abandon the planned #EndBadGovernance protest scheduled for August 1.

The protest, organised by an unidentified group, has gained momentum on social media and is set to occur across all 36 states and the Federal Capital Territory.

The meeting aims to discuss strategies to address the nation’s economic challenges and find ways to mitigate the growing discontent among Nigerians.

Earlier, the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) refuted claims that it has pulled out of the upcoming nationwide protest against economic hardship.

News About Nigeria reported that Ajaero said the union cannot withdraw from a protest it did not organise.
